Magpie Pottery has been located in the desert outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico for the past 10 years. A fully professional studio, Magpie Pottery operates with 3 computer-controlled kilns and the same number of dogs. All work is constructed from a beautiful, smooth white-clay body (half porcelain and half stoneware), then electric fired to a mid-range stoneware temperature of cone 6. From 1990-1993, I studied ceramics formally at the University of Colorado, Boulder, receiving a Master of Fine Arts degree. Since migrating to the desert outside of Santa Fe, my work has focused on both tableware and decorative tile. I am continually interested in the surface/textural possibilites of clay, and have recently incorporated laser toner transfers into my work. I utilize both slabs wheel-thrown forms to make work that I hope is loose, lively, and visually interesting. It has always been important to me to let the clay speak, to allow for it’s fluidity, sensuousness, and spontaneity. Journeying through the ceramic cycle- from clay’s incredible softness, to the fire of the kiln, and back again to hardened stone- never ceases to produce in me a sense of awe and immense gratitude that I get to spend my life participating in it.
